About this worksheet

A multiplication fact like 4 × 6 means 4 equal groups of 6. Children start by skip-counting (6, 12, 18, 24) and practice until the answer comes without counting.

Third grade aims for every product of two one-digit numbers from memory. This sheet mixes the facts up, including a few × 11 and × 12 facts to stretch toward fourth grade, so a child can't just follow a pattern down a column.

A worked example

7 × 4 =

  1. Read it as 7 groups of 4.
  2. Skip-count by 4, seven times: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28.
  3. The last number is the product.

Answer: 28

The common mistake

What it looks like: Adding instead of multiplying: 7 × 4 = 11.

Why it happens: Addition facts are older and more automatic, and the two signs look alike when a child is hurrying.

How to fix it: Say the fact as groups out loud ("seven fours"), and check that the answer is bigger than both numbers when neither is 0 or 1.
