About this worksheet

Elapsed time is how much time passes from a start to an end. Some questions give both times and ask for the minutes; others give the start and the minutes and ask when it ends.

The useful habit is counting up by fives from the start time. Each time the count reaches 60 minutes, that is one hour, and the count starts over at 5.

A worked example

Starts at 2:05. Ends at 3:15. How many minutes?

  1. Count up by 5s from 2:05: 2:10 is 5, 2:15 is 10, and so on.
  2. At 3:05 the count reaches 60 minutes: that is 1 hour. Start over at 5.
  3. 3:10 is 5 and 3:15 is 10, so it took 1 hour and 10 minutes: 70 minutes.

Answer: 70 minutes

The common mistake

What it looks like: Going past the hour as if there were 100 minutes in it: 7:50 plus 20 minutes written as 7:70.

Why it happens: Children add minutes the way they add any other numbers, and the clock's 60 breaks that habit.

How to fix it: Count on to the next hour first (7:50 to 8:00 is 10 minutes), then count the rest from there (8:10).

Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
