About this worksheet
Perimeter is the distance all the way around a shape. For a rectangle, that is two long sides and two short sides.
Each rectangle is labeled with just one long side and one short side, because the opposite sides of a rectangle are equal. Part of the skill is knowing there are four sides to add, not two.
A worked example
A rectangle is 14 in long and 2 in wide. What is its perimeter?
- The two long sides: 14 + 14 = 28.
- The two short sides: 2 + 2 = 4.
- Write it as one equation and solve it: 14 + 2 + 14 + 2 = 32.
Answer: 32 in
The common mistake
What it looks like: Adding only the two labeled sides: 14 + 2 = 16 in.
Why it happens: The picture shows two numbers, so children add two numbers.
How to fix it: Trace around the rectangle with a finger and say a length for each of the four sides before adding.
