About this worksheet

Second graders solve one-step story problems with numbers up to 100. Some ask for the total, and some hide the start or the change, like "How many did he have at first?"

Asking "put together or taken away?" before calculating keeps a child from grabbing the two numbers and adding them.

A worked example

Leo had some marbles. He found 18 more. Now he has 45. How many marbles did he have at first?

  1. Read the story: some marbles, then 18 more, and now 45.
  2. Some were added, but the start is missing: ? + 18 = 45.
  3. Count up from 18 to 45, or take 18 from 45: 27.

Answer: 27

The common mistake

What it looks like: Answering 63, from adding 45 and 18.

Why it happens: "Found more" sounds like adding, so the child adds the two numbers they see.

How to fix it: Write the story as a number sentence with a ? first. Seeing ? + 18 = 45 shows that 45 is already the total.
