About this worksheet
Base-ten blocks show what each digit of a three-digit number is worth. A flat is one hundred, a rod is ten, and a small cube is one.
Writing the hundreds, tens and ones in separate boxes before the whole number shows a child where each digit comes from, and why 305 needs a 0 in the middle.
A worked example
2 flats, 4 rods and 3 cubes. What number is it?
- Count the flats: 2 hundreds.
- Count the rods: 4 tens.
- Count the cubes: 3 ones.
- Write the digits in order, hundreds first: 243.
Answer: 243
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing 53 for 5 flats and 3 cubes, with no rods.
Why it happens: With nothing in the tens place, the child writes only the digits they can see.
How to fix it: Fill all three place boxes first, and write 0 in any box with no blocks over it: 5, 0, 3 makes 503.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
