About this worksheet
Counting coins means skip-counting by different amounts in one go: 25 for a quarter, 10 for a dime, 5 for a nickel and 1 for a penny.
Starting with the coin worth the most and counting on keeps the numbers simple, and it is how adults count change.
A worked example
1 quarter, 2 dimes, 1 nickel and 3 pennies. How much?
- Start with the quarter: 25.
- Count on the dimes by tens: 35, 45.
- Count on the nickel by five: 50.
- Count on the pennies by ones: 51, 52, 53.
Answer: 53¢
The common mistake
What it looks like: Treating a nickel as worth more than a dime because it is bigger, or counting each coin as one.
Why it happens: Size is the easiest thing to see, but a coin's size doesn't match its value.
How to fix it: Sort the coins from most to least value before counting, and say each coin's value as it is touched.
