About this worksheet
Adding tens first is how most people add two-digit numbers in their heads: 58 + 29 is 58 + 20, then 9 more.
Each question writes the first step out (58 + 29 = 78 + ___), so the child sees that the tens are done and only the ones are left.
A worked example
58 + 29 = 78 + ___
- Split the second number: 29 = 20 + 9.
- Add the tens to the first number: 58 + 20 = 78.
- The ones are left to add: 78 + 9.
Answer: 9
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing the whole second number (29) in the box, or the final total (87).
Why it happens: The child reads the question as a whole sum instead of looking at what has already been added.
How to fix it: Point to the tens already added (78 is 58 + 20), then ask: what part of 29 is still waiting? Only the 9.
