About this worksheet
In second grade, children read the minute hand by counting by fives: each number on the clock is five more minutes.
The hour hand moves too. By 7:45 it is most of the way to 8, which is why the hour is the number the short hand has passed.
A worked example
The short hand is between 7 and 8. The long hand points to the 9.
- Find the short hand: it has passed the 7, so the hour is 7.
- Find the long hand and count by fives from the 12: 5, 10, 15 … 45.
- Write 7 in the first box and 45 in the second.
Answer: 7:45
The common mistake
What it looks like: Reading 7:45 as 8:45.
Why it happens: Late in the hour, the short hand is close to the next number, so the child reads that number.
How to fix it: Ask which number the short hand has passed, not which it is closest to.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
