About this worksheet

A bar graph shows how many of each kind there are. Second graders read the bars and use them to add and compare.

"How many more" questions are subtraction in disguise: find both bars, then take the shorter from the longer.

A worked example

Swim has 9 children. Dance has 2. How many more swim than dance?

  1. Find the swim bar and read across: 9.
  2. Find the dance bar and read across: 2.
  3. How many more means subtract: 9 − 2 = 7.

Answer: 7

The common mistake

What it looks like: Answering 9, the height of the taller bar.

Why it happens: The child answers "how many swim?" instead of comparing the two bars.

How to fix it: Underline "how many more" in the question, and read both bars before writing anything.
