About this worksheet
Measuring with a ruler means lining the object up at zero and reading where it ends. Second graders measure in inches and centimeters.
Some rulers on the sheet are in inches and some are in centimeters, so the unit is part of the answer.
A worked example
A bar starts at 0 on a centimeter ruler and ends at the 9.
- Check that the bar starts at 0.
- Find the number where the bar ends: 9.
- Write the number and its unit: 9 cm.
Answer: 9 cm
The common mistake
What it looks like: Starting at the 1 instead of the 0, and getting one too many.
Why it happens: The child counts the numbers printed on the ruler rather than the spaces between them.
How to fix it: Length is the spaces, not the numbers. Line the end up with 0, then read the number where it stops.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
