About this worksheet

Second graders split shapes into 2, 3 or 4 equal parts and name them as halves, thirds and fourths.

Seeing the same fraction in different shapes, such as a square cut corner to corner and a circle cut down the middle, shows that halves are about equal parts, not about one shape.

A worked example

A square cut corner to corner, with one of its two triangles shaded.

  1. Count the shaded parts: 1.
  2. Count all the equal parts: 2.
  3. Write it as a fraction: 1 out of 2 is 1/2.

Answer: 1/2

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing 1/1 for one shaded part next to one white part.

Why it happens: The child compares the shaded part with the unshaded part instead of with the whole.

How to fix it: The bottom number counts every part, shaded or not. Count them all before writing.
