About this worksheet

A number line turns adding and subtracting into moving: forward to add, back to subtract. Second graders use lines counted by 1s, 5s and 10s up to 100.

Drawing the jumps keeps track of how far you have gone, and it shows why 70 − 40 lands on 30.

A worked example

25 + 20 = ___ on a line from 0 to 50, counted by 5s.

  1. Find 25 on the line and mark it with a dot.
  2. Adding, so jump forward 20: 30, 35, 40, 45.
  3. Write where you land: 45.

Answer: 45

The common mistake

What it looks like: Counting the starting mark as the first jump, and landing one step short.

Why it happens: The child says "one" while still on the first number instead of after the first hop.

How to fix it: Put a finger on the first number and say nothing. Count each hop as it lands on the next mark.
