About this worksheet

Regrouping (also called carrying) happens when the ones add up to 10 or more, like 7 + 8 in 47 + 38. Ten of those ones become one more ten.

Expanded form shows that trade instead of hiding it in a small carried 1: 47 is 40 + 7, so the tens and the ones are added separately and then combined.

A worked example

47 + 38 = ?

  1. Split into place values: 47 = 40 + 7 and 38 = 30 + 8.
  2. Add the tens: 40 + 30 = 70.
  3. Add the ones: 7 + 8 = 15.
  4. Put the parts back together: 70 + 15 = 85.

Answer: 47 + 38 = 85

The common mistake

What it looks like: Losing the ten inside the ones: writing 75 for 47 + 38, or writing 715 by putting the 15 down whole.

Why it happens: 15 is one ten and five ones, but children write it in the ones place as if it were a single digit, or drop the ten.

How to fix it: Say what the ones total is made of: "15 is 1 ten and 5 ones." Then add that ten to the tens: 70 + 10 + 5.
