About this worksheet

Volume is how much space a solid takes up, measured in cubes. A rectangular prism that is 6 feet long, 8 feet wide and 5 feet high holds 6 × 8 × 5 cubes, each one foot on every side.

The answer is in cubic units, like ft³ or in³, because each unit is a cube.

A worked example

A box 6 ft long, 8 ft wide and 5 ft high. What is its volume?

  1. Multiply the length and the width: 6 × 8 = 48. That many cubes cover the bottom layer.
  2. Multiply by the height: 48 × 5 = 240. That is 5 layers of 48.
  3. Write the unit as cubic feet: ft³.

Answer: 240 ft³

The common mistake

What it looks like: Adding the three measurements, 6 + 8 + 5 = 19, or writing the answer in square feet.

Why it happens: Perimeter adds the sides and area uses square units, and both come before volume.

How to fix it: Picture the layers: the bottom layer is length × width cubes, and the height says how many layers. A cube unit gets the little 3.
