About this worksheet

The order of operations is the agreed order for working out an expression: parentheses, then exponents, then multiplying and dividing from left to right, then adding and subtracting from left to right.

Every expression on this sheet starts with parentheses. The example works one step to a line and names each step.

A worked example

(11 + 4) × 4 = ?

  1. Parentheses first: 11 + 4 = 15, so the expression is 15 × 4.
  2. Multiply: 15 × 4 = 60.

Answer: (11 + 4) × 4 = 60

The common mistake

What it looks like: Working left to right without the parentheses: 11 + 4 × 4 = 11 + 16 = 27.

Why it happens: Left to right is how we read, and it feels like the natural order.

How to fix it: Circle what is in the parentheses and work it out first, then write the expression again with that answer in its place.
