About this worksheet
Dividing a decimal by a whole number is long division with one extra step: the decimal point in the answer goes straight above the point in the number being divided.
Each problem has a box for every digit and a column for the point, so the point lines up on its own. The first problem is worked out in full.
A worked example
13.12 ÷ 2 = ?
- Put the point in the answer straight above the point in 13.12.
- Divide as with whole numbers: 2 goes into 13 six times, 13 − 12 = 1.
- Bring down the 1 to make 11: 2 × 5 = 10, and 11 − 10 = 1.
- Bring down the 2 to make 12: 2 × 6 = 12, and nothing is left.
Answer: 13.12 ÷ 2 = 6.56
The common mistake
What it looks like: Putting the point in the wrong place, like 65.6, or leaving it out.
Why it happens: The dividing itself is the same as with whole numbers, so the point gets forgotten until the end.
How to fix it: Write the point in the answer before dividing at all, straight above the one below it.
