About this worksheet
To multiply decimals, multiply as if there were no points, then put the point back. The answer has as many digits after the point as both numbers have together.
Most problems on this sheet multiply a decimal by a whole number, and four multiply tenths by tenths, like 84.6 × 7.2.
A worked example
9.06 × 4 = ?
- Count the digits after the point: 9.06 has 2 and 4 has none, so 2 decimal places in all.
- Multiply without the point: 906 × 4 = 3,624.
- Move the point 2 places left from the end: 36.24.
Answer: 9.06 × 4 = 36.24
The common mistake
What it looks like: Lining up the decimal points in the answer the way you would when adding, and writing 362.4.
Why it happens: Adding decimals lines up the points, so it seems the product's point should sit under them too.
How to fix it: Ignore where the points sit in the problem. Count the decimal places in both numbers and give the answer that many.
