About this worksheet

Long division with a two-digit divisor is the same routine as dividing by one digit: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down the next digit, and repeat. What changes is the dividing step, because nobody knows the 23 times table by heart.

Each problem on this sheet has a box for every digit, so the working lines up in its places. The first problem is worked out in full, with each multiplication and subtraction written beside its line.

A worked example

2,275 ÷ 13 = ?

  1. 13 doesn't go into 2, so start with 22. 13 goes into 22 once: write 1 on top, and 22 − 13 = 9.
  2. Bring down the 7 to make 97. 13 × 7 = 91, so write 7 on top, and 97 − 91 = 6.
  3. Bring down the 5 to make 65. 13 × 5 = 65, so write 5 on top, and 65 − 65 = 0.

Answer: 2,275 ÷ 13 = 175

The common mistake

What it looks like: Guessing a digit that is too big, like 8 for 97 ÷ 13, and getting a product larger than the number above it.

Why it happens: With a two-digit divisor the digit is an estimate, and the first guess is often off by one.

How to fix it: Round the divisor to estimate (13 is close to 10, so try 9, then check 13 × 9 = 117). If the product is bigger than the number you are dividing, try one less.
