About this worksheet
The standard method multiplies by one digit of the bottom number at a time. Multiplying by the ones digit gives the first line, multiplying by the tens digit gives the second, and the two lines added together give the answer.
The first problem on the sheet is worked out, with each line labeled with the multiplication it came from, like 332 × 60.
A worked example
332 × 61 = ?
- Multiply by the ones digit: 332 × 1 = 332.
- Multiply by the tens digit. The 6 means 60, so 332 × 60 = 19,920. Write a zero in the ones place first.
- Add the two lines: 332 + 19,920 = 20,252.
Answer: 332 × 61 = 20,252
The common mistake
What it looks like: Leaving out the zero on the second line and writing 1,992 instead of 19,920.
Why it happens: The 6 in 61 looks like a 6, so it gets multiplied like one, but it means 60.
How to fix it: Write the zero in the ones place before multiplying by the tens digit. It holds the place, so every digit after it lands one place to the left.
