Rounding Decimals

10 questions, one page, US Letter. Print it and do it on paper.

On the sheet: Underline the digit in the place you are rounding to and look at the digit to its right: 5 or more adds one to the underlined digit, 4 or less leaves it. Drop the digits after it, or change them to zero if they are before the decimal point. Do this for each place: the hundredths, the tenths, the ones and the tens.

About this worksheet

Rounding a decimal works the same way as rounding a whole number. Find the place you are rounding to and look at the digit to its right: 5 or more rounds up, 4 or less stays the same.

Each number on this sheet is rounded four times, to the hundredths, tenths, ones and tens, so a child sees how the same number changes at each place.

A worked example

Round 72.162 to each place.

  1. Hundredths: the digit after the 6 is 2, so it stays 72.16.
  2. Tenths: the digit after the 1 is 6, so the 1 goes up: 72.2.
  3. Ones: the digit after the 2 is 1, so it stays 72.
  4. Tens: the digit after the 7 is 2, so it stays 70.

Answer: 72.16, 72.2, 72, 70

The common mistake

What it looks like: Rounding 72.162 to the tenths as 72.20 or 72.200.

Why it happens: Changing the dropped digits to zeros is the rule for whole numbers, and it gets carried across the point.

How to fix it: After the decimal point, drop the digits instead of writing zeros. Before the point, the zeros stay to hold the places.
