About this worksheet
A coordinate plane is a grid with two number lines: the x-axis across the bottom and the y-axis up the side. An ordered pair like (1, 7) gives a point's place, across first, then up.
This sheet uses the first quadrant, numbered 0 to 10 on each axis, with eight lettered points to read.
A worked example
Point I
- Start at 0 and count across the x-axis to the point: 1.
- Count up the y-axis to the point: 7.
- Write across first, then up, in parentheses: (1, 7).
Answer: Point I = (1, 7)
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing the numbers backward, (7, 1) for a point at (1, 7).
Why it happens: Up and down feels like the first thing to read, and both numbers are on the grid.
How to fix it: Across first, then up, the way you walk into a building before you take the elevator.
