About this worksheet

Text structure is how a writer organizes information. Fourth graders meet five common ones: sequence, compare and contrast, cause and effect, problem and solution, and description.

Signal words give the structure away: first, next and finally show a sequence; unlike and both show a comparison; because and so show cause and effect. This sheet's passage uses several, and the questions ask the child to find them.

A worked example

First, crack the eggs into a bowl. Next, whisk them with a fork. Finally, pour them into the hot pan. How is this passage organized?

  1. Look for signal words: First, Next, Finally.
  2. Those words put steps in order.

Answer: Sequence

The common mistake

What it looks like: Naming the topic instead of the structure: answering "eggs" or "cooking."

Why it happens: "How is it organized?" sounds a lot like "What is it about?"

How to fix it: Structure is the shape, not the subject. Circle the signal words first, then ask what job they do: put things in order, compare, or explain why.
