About this worksheet
The main idea is what a whole passage is mostly about. The details are there to support it: numbers, examples and reasons.
A summary retells the main idea and the most important details in a few sentences and leaves out the small stuff. This sheet has one article and eight questions with two choices each.
A worked example
Bees visit flowers to collect nectar. As they move from flower to flower, pollen sticks to their bodies and rubs off on the next plant. That pollen helps the plants make seeds. What is the main idea?
- Look for what every sentence has in common: bees, flowers and pollen.
- Check each sentence against your answer: collecting nectar, carrying pollen and making seeds all fit.
- Say it in one sentence.
Answer: Bees help plants make seeds by carrying pollen from flower to flower.
The common mistake
What it looks like: Choosing an interesting detail as the main idea, like "Pollen sticks to bees."
Why it happens: The detail is true and memorable, so it feels important.
How to fix it: Test it: does every sentence in the passage support it? A detail fits one sentence. The main idea fits them all.
