About this worksheet
Modal verbs are helping verbs that change the meaning of the verb after them. Can and could show what someone is able to do, may asks or gives permission, must shows something that has to happen, and should gives advice.
Might, will and would show how likely something is. "It might rain" is a maybe, and "It will rain" is a sure thing. Each question asks the child to pick the one that matches what the sentence means.
A worked example
The sign says all dogs (must / might) stay on a leash.
- A sign states a rule.
- A rule is something that has to happen, so must fits.
Answer: must
The common mistake
What it looks like: Choosing might where the sentence states a rule: Visitors might sign in.
Why it happens: Both words fit the grammar, so the sentence sounds fine either way.
How to fix it: Ask what the sentence means: a rule, a maybe, advice or permission? Then match the modal. A rule takes must, and a maybe takes might.
