About this worksheet

Some words don't spell the way they sound. Business sounds like "bizness", separate sounds like "seperate", and calendar could end in -er. This sheet has eight words like that: favorite, surprise, business, calendar, separate, beginning, thought and bought.

Read, cover and spell is a three-step routine. Copy the word and split it into syllables, highlight the tricky letters, then fold the page and write it from memory.

A worked example

beautiful

  1. Read it and copy it into the center column.
  2. Split it into syllables: beau / ti / ful.
  3. Highlight the letters that don't sound the way you expect: "beau", which says "byoo".
  4. Fold the page, write the word from memory, then unfold it and check.

Answer: beautiful

The common mistake

What it looks like: Spelling separate as "seperate".

Why it happens: In everyday speech the middle vowel sounds like "uh" or "eh", not "a".

How to fix it: Say it the way it's spelled, sep-A-rate, while writing it, and highlight the a. Saying the spelling helps the eye remember it.
