About this worksheet
An inference is a smart guess built from clues in the text plus what a reader already knows. A story where a boy wraps his jacket around library books in the rain never says he wanted them dry, but the clues do.
This sheet has one short passage and eight questions with two choices each. The right answer is always one the passage supports, not one that only could be true.
A worked example
Maya's umbrella dripped by the door, and her shoes left wet prints across the floor. What was the weather like outside?
- Find the clues: a dripping umbrella and wet shoes.
- Add what you know: umbrellas and shoes get wet in the rain.
- Choose the answer the clues support.
Answer: It was raining.
The common mistake
What it looks like: Choosing an answer that could be true but that nothing in the passage supports.
Why it happens: Both choices can sound reasonable, and a child picks the one that fits their own experience.
How to fix it: Ask which words in the passage say so. If the child can't point to a clue, it's a guess, not an inference.
