About this worksheet

A progressive verb shows an action that is going on: was reading, is reading, will be reading. It is a helping verb (was, is or will be) plus the -ing form of the verb.

A clue word in each sentence gives the time: last night or when I arrived means the past (was or were), right now means the present (am, is or are), and tomorrow or an hour from now means the future (will be).

A worked example

Right now the puppies ___ in the yard. (nap)

  1. Find the time clue: right now, so the present.
  2. The subject, puppies, is plural, so the helping verb is are.
  3. Add -ing to the verb, doubling the p: napping.

Answer: Right now the puppies are napping in the yard.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Leaving out the helping verb: The children playing in the yard.

Why it happens: The -ing word carries the meaning, so the helping verb feels optional.

How to fix it: A progressive verb is always two or three words. Check that each answer has was, were, is, are, am or will be in front of the -ing word.
