About this worksheet

A relative pronoun starts a clause that tells more about a noun: the student whose notebook was missing. Who stands for a person doing the action, whom for a person the action is done to, and whose shows who owns something.

Which stands for a thing or an animal, and that can stand for a person or a thing. Which often starts an extra description set off by commas: Our garden, which gets sun all day, grows beans.

A worked example

The coach ___ team won got a trophy.

  1. Look at the noun before the blank: the coach, a person.
  2. The clause says the team belongs to the coach.
  3. Belonging takes whose.

Answer: The coach whose team won got a trophy.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Using who where whom belongs: The friend with who I traveled is ill.

Why it happens: Who is far more common in speech, so whom sounds stiff and gets skipped.

How to fix it: Answer the clause with he or him: I traveled with him. If him fits, use whom.
