About this worksheet
Equivalent fractions name the same amount with different numbers: 3/4 of a pizza is the same as 9/12 of it, cut into smaller slices.
Multiplying the top and the bottom by the same number cuts every piece into that many smaller pieces, so the amount stays the same.
A worked example
3/4 = ?/12
- See what the bottom was multiplied by: 4 × 3 = 12.
- Multiply the top by the same number: 3 × 3 = 9.
- Write the equivalent fraction: 3/4 = 9/12.
Answer: 9
The common mistake
What it looks like: Adding the same number to the top and bottom instead of multiplying: 3/4 = 11/12 (adding 8 to each).
Why it happens: Adding feels like "doing the same to both", but it changes the size of the fraction.
How to fix it: Compare them: 3/4 is three quarters, but 11/12 is almost a whole. Equivalent fractions come from multiplying or dividing both.
