About this worksheet
Each digit in a number sits in a place, and the place gives it its value. In 964,676, the 4 is in the thousands place, so it is worth 4,000.
Reading from the right, the places go ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands. The comma marks where the thousands begin.
A worked example
251,639: the 5
- Start at the right and name each place as you move left: 9 is ones, 3 is tens, 6 is hundreds, 1 is thousands.
- The next digit, the 5, is in the ten thousands place.
Answer: ten thousands
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting places from the left: calling the 5 in 251,639 the tens place.
Why it happens: Children read numbers left to right, so they count places that way too.
How to fix it: Places are always counted from the right, starting with ones. Use the comma: the three digits to its left are thousands, ten thousands, and hundred thousands.
