About this worksheet
Multiplying a big number by one digit is a row of small facts. Multiply the ones, then the tens, then the hundreds, then the thousands, writing each answer under its own place.
When a product is 10 or more, its ones digit stays in that place and its tens carry to the next place, where they are added after the next multiplication.
A worked example
347 × 6 = ?
- Ones: 7 × 6 = 42. Write the 2 and carry the 4.
- Tens: 4 × 6 = 24, plus the 4 carried is 28. Write the 8 and carry the 2.
- Hundreds: 3 × 6 = 18, plus the 2 carried is 20. Write 20.
Answer: 347 × 6 = 2,082
The common mistake
What it looks like: Adding the carry before multiplying: in 347 × 6, working out (4 + 4) × 6 = 48 in the tens.
Why it happens: The carried digit sits on top of the next digit, so it looks like part of the number to multiply.
How to fix it: Multiply first, then add the carry: 4 × 6 = 24, then 24 + 4 = 28.
