About this worksheet
Long division splits a big division into small steps, one digit at a time, from the left. Each round has the same four moves: divide, multiply, subtract, and bring down the next digit.
Every question on this sheet divides evenly, so the last subtraction leaves 0. Any answer can be checked by multiplying it by the divisor.
A worked example
736 ÷ 8 = ?
- 8 does not go into 7, so start with 73: 73 ÷ 8 = 9. Write the 9 above the 3.
- Multiply and subtract: 9 × 8 = 72, and 73 − 72 = 1.
- Bring down the 6 to make 16: 16 ÷ 8 = 2. Write the 2 above the 6.
- Multiply and subtract: 2 × 8 = 16, and 16 − 16 = 0.
Answer: 736 ÷ 8 = 92
The common mistake
What it looks like: Leaving out a zero in the answer: 832 ÷ 8 = 14 instead of 104.
Why it happens: After the 3 is brought down, 8 doesn't go into 3, and the child moves on without writing anything above it.
How to fix it: Every digit brought down gets a digit above it. If the divisor doesn't fit, write a 0 there, then bring down the next digit.
