About this worksheet
When two fractions have the same denominator, their pieces are the same size, so adding them is counting pieces: 2 fifths and 1 fifth make 3 fifths.
The denominator names the size of the pieces, so it stays the same. Then check whether the answer can be written in lowest terms: 5/10 + 3/10 = 8/10, which is 4/5.
A worked example
3/8 + 1/8 = ?
- Both fractions are in eighths, so add the numerators: 3 + 1 = 4.
- Keep the denominator: 4/8.
- 4 and 8 can both be divided by 4: 4/8 = 1/2.
Answer: 3/8 + 1/8 = 1/2
The common mistake
What it looks like: Adding the denominators too: 3/8 + 1/8 = 4/16.
Why it happens: Adding across the top and the bottom looks like doing the same thing to both parts.
How to fix it: The denominator is the size of the pieces, and eighths added to eighths are still eighths. Only the numerators are added.
