About this worksheet
Rounding gives a simpler number that is close to the real one. Underline the digit in the place you are rounding to, and look at the digit just to its right.
If that digit is 5 or more, the underlined digit goes up by one. If it is 4 or less, the underlined digit stays. Every digit after the underlined one becomes zero.
A worked example
Round 652,854 to the nearest thousand.
- Underline the thousands digit, the 2.
- Look at the digit to its right, the 8 in the hundreds place. 8 is 5 or more, so the 2 goes up to 3.
- Change every digit after it to zero.
Answer: 653,000
The common mistake
What it looks like: Changing only the next digit to zero: rounding 652,854 to the nearest thousand as 653,054.
Why it happens: The child rounds the underlined digit correctly and stops at the digit that decided it.
How to fix it: After the underlined digit, every digit becomes zero. Rounding to thousands always leaves three zeros at the end.
