About this worksheet

Multiplying two 2-digit numbers is two smaller multiplications. First multiply the top number by the ones digit of the bottom number. Then multiply it by the tens digit, and add the two lines.

The second line starts with a zero in the ones place, because the tens digit is a number of tens: in 27 × 45, the 4 means 40.

A worked example

27 × 45 = ?

  1. Multiply by the ones digit: 27 × 5 = 135. Write it on the first line.
  2. Write a zero in the ones place of the second line, then multiply by the tens digit: 27 × 4 = 108, so the line reads 1,080.
  3. Add the two lines: 135 + 1,080 = 1,215.

Answer: 27 × 45 = 1,215

The common mistake

What it looks like: Forgetting the zero on the second line: 135 + 108 = 243.

Why it happens: The child multiplies by the 4 and writes the answer straight under the first line, as if the 4 were ones.

How to fix it: Say the digit's value before multiplying: the 4 in 45 is 40. Write the zero first, then 27 × 4 to its left.
