About this worksheet

Partial quotients is a way to divide bigger numbers in chunks. Instead of one hard division, a child takes out easy groups, like 10 or 20 groups at a time, and adds up how many groups they took.

It builds the same understanding as long division, step by step, and lets a child use the facts they are sure of.

A worked example

84 ÷ 4 = ?

  1. Split 84 into parts that 4 divides easily: 80 + 4.
  2. 80 ÷ 4 = 20.
  3. 4 ÷ 4 = 1.
  4. Add the groups: 20 + 1 = 21.

Answer: 84 ÷ 4 = 21

The common mistake

What it looks like: Adding the parts of the number instead of the answers to each division: 80 + 4 = 84.

Why it happens: There are two kinds of numbers on the page, the parts being divided and how many groups each made, and they get mixed up.

How to fix it: Write each part's answer in its own column, and add only that column: 20 + 1.
