About this worksheet
7 × 40 is 7 × 4 tens: 28 tens, which is 280. Multiplying by a multiple of 10 is a basic fact with a zero on the end.
Third graders learn why the zero is there, not just that it is: 4 tens is 40, so 7 groups of 4 tens is 28 tens. That understanding carries them into multiplying bigger numbers in fourth grade.
A worked example
5 × 70 =
- Cover the zero: 5 × 7 = 35.
- That is 35 tens.
- Put the zero back: 350.
Answer: 350
The common mistake
What it looks like: Dropping or doubling the zero: 6 × 50 written as 30 or 3,000.
Why it happens: Children memorize "add a zero" without knowing why, so they lose track of how many zeros belong.
How to fix it: Say it in tens: 6 × 5 tens is 30 tens, and 30 tens is 300.
