About this worksheet

When two fractions have the same denominator, the whole is cut into the same number of equal parts, so every part is the same size. The fraction with more parts is greater: 3/5 > 2/5.

Third graders compare fractions by reasoning about the parts, not by a rule, so a fraction like 4/4 (one whole) sits naturally beside 1/4.

A worked example

3/6 ___ 5/6

  1. The denominators are the same: both are sixths.
  2. Compare the numerators: 3 parts is less than 5 parts.
  3. Write the symbol: 3/6 < 5/6.

Answer: <

The common mistake

What it looks like: Pointing the symbol the wrong way: 3/6 > 5/6.

Why it happens: The comparison is right in the child's head, but the < and > symbols are still easy to flip.

How to fix it: The open side of the symbol faces the bigger number. Say it as you write: "3/6 is less than 5/6."
