About this worksheet
A conjunction joins words or ideas. And, but, or and so join two ideas that matter the same amount. Because, when, if, after, before, until and unless add an idea that tells why, when or under what condition.
Each sentence offers two conjunctions that are both grammatical, and only one makes sense, so the child has to read the whole sentence and think about how the two ideas connect.
A worked example
We stayed inside at recess because / or it was raining hard.
- Read the two ideas: we stayed inside; it was raining hard.
- The second idea is the reason for the first.
- A reason takes because.
Answer: because
The common mistake
What it looks like: Choosing and for everything: "We stayed inside and it was raining."
Why it happens: And is the first joining word children learn, and it always sounds acceptable.
How to fix it: Ask how the ideas connect. Is one the reason (because), a time (when, before, after) or a surprise (but)?
