About this worksheet

I and me both mean the speaker, but they do different jobs. I is the one doing the action (I swept the porch). Me is the one the action happens to (The coach picked me).

Children get it right on their own, then lose it when another name joins in: "Ava and me swept the porch" sounds fine to a lot of ears. Every sentence on this sheet pairs I or me with another person, which is where the mistake happens.

A worked example

My sister and ___ share a room.

  1. Leave the other person out: ___ share a room.
  2. "I share a room" sounds right; "Me share a room" does not.
  3. Put the other person back: My sister and I share a room.

Answer: My sister and I share a room.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing me when it is the one doing the action: "Lily and me planted beans."

Why it happens: With two names, the sentence sounds fine either way, and "me" is what many children hear in everyday speech.

How to fix it: Cover the other name with a finger and read the sentence again. "Me planted beans" sounds wrong, so it is I.
