About this worksheet

The past tense tells what already happened. Most verbs add -ed (walk, walked), but many of the most common ones change in their own way: take becomes took, draw becomes drew, swim becomes swam.

Third graders still mix the two up, so this sheet puts regular and irregular verbs side by side, each in a sentence that signals the past ("Yesterday", "Last night").

A worked example

This morning, Ava ___ breakfast. (past tense of make)

  1. "This morning" tells us it already happened.
  2. Make is irregular: it doesn't take -ed.
  3. The past tense of make is made.

Answer: This morning, Ava made breakfast.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Adding -ed to an irregular verb: taked, drawed, swimmed.

Why it happens: The -ed rule works so often that children apply it everywhere. It's a sign they've learned the rule, not a careless slip.

How to fix it: Say the sentence out loud. Most children already hear that "I taked" sounds wrong, even before they can spell "took".
