About this worksheet

These are words third graders read and write all the time (because, different, believe, enough) that are not spelled the way they sound.

The sheet uses copy, cover, write and check. The child copies each word, splits it into syllables and highlights the letters that don't sound the way they look, then folds the page to write it from memory. Writing from memory, then checking, is what makes a spelling stick.

A worked example

Wednesday

  1. Copy it: Wednesday.
  2. Split it into syllables: Wed / nes / day.
  3. Highlight the surprising letter: the d in Wed is silent.
  4. Fold, write it from memory, then unfold and check.

Answer: Wednesday

The common mistake

What it looks like: Spelling by sound: "enuf" for enough, "diffrent" for different.

Why it happens: Sounding words out works for most words, so children trust it here too.

How to fix it: Look at the part that breaks the sound rule (ough, the middle e) and say it the way it's spelled: "dif-fer-ent".

Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
