About this worksheet
Homophones sound the same but are spelled differently and mean different things. To means toward (go to school), too means also or more than enough (too loud), and two is the number 2.
There tells where (over there), their shows that something belongs to people (their bikes), and they're is short for they are. These six words are some of the most often mixed up in all of children's writing, and in grown-ups' too.
A worked example
Keisha carried her lunchbox to / too / two the picnic table.
- Ask what the word is doing: it points toward the picnic table.
- Toward is to.
Answer: to
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing their for they're: "Their going to the park."
Why it happens: The words sound the same, and children pick the one they have seen most.
How to fix it: Try saying "they are" in its place. If the sentence still makes sense, the word is they're.
