About this worksheet

A comma goes between the day and the year in a date (July 4, 1976) and between a city and its state or country (Denver, Colorado; Dublin, Ireland).

In a sentence, a comma also goes after the year or the state when the sentence keeps going: "On July 4, 1976, the town held a picnic." This sheet practices both.

A worked example

She was born on May 4 2011 in Denver Colorado.

  1. Find the date: May 4 2011. Put a comma between the day and the year.
  2. Find the place: Denver Colorado. Put a comma between the city and the state.

Answer: She was born on May 4, 2011, in Denver, Colorado.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Putting a comma between the month and the day: "May, 4 2011."

Why it happens: Children know a date needs a comma and guess where it goes.

How to fix it: The comma separates the two numbers, the day and the year, so they don't run together: May 4, 2011.
