About this worksheet
Their, there and they're sound the same but mean different things. Their shows something belongs to them, there is a place, and they're is short for they are.
These are some of the most mixed-up words in writing at every age, so second grade is a good time to sort them out.
A worked example
My friends left (their / there / they're) umbrellas on the bus.
- Try "they are": "left they are umbrellas" doesn't make sense.
- Is it a place? No. Do the umbrellas belong to the friends? Yes.
- Circle their.
Answer: their
The common mistake
What it looks like: Using there for everything.
Why it happens: There is the first of the three most children learn to spell, so it becomes the default.
How to fix it: Test they're first by saying "they are". Then ask if something belongs to them (their) or if it is a place (there).
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
