About this worksheet
An adverb tells more about a verb: how (quietly), when (today) or where (upstairs). Many adverbs end in -ly, but not all of them.
Asking how, when or where about the action leads the child to the adverb.
A worked example
Our dog barked loudly at the mail truck.
- Find the verb: barked.
- Ask how, when or where it barked: loudly tells how.
- Circle loudly.
Answer: loudly
The common mistake
What it looks like: Missing adverbs without -ly, such as today, there and upstairs.
Why it happens: Children learn that adverbs end in -ly and look only for that ending.
How to fix it: Ask the three questions about the verb (how? when? where?) instead of looking for -ly.
