About this worksheet

An adjective tells more about a noun: what color, what size, what kind. In "the tall giraffe", tall is the adjective.

Every sentence on the sheet has one adjective, so the child looks for the word that tells about a noun rather than the noun itself.

A worked example

The puppy chewed a soft toy.

  1. Find the nouns: puppy and toy.
  2. Look for a word that tells more about one of them: soft tells what kind of toy.
  3. Double underline soft.

Answer: soft

The common mistake

What it looks like: Underlining the noun (toy) instead of the word that describes it.

Why it happens: Nouns are the words children practiced finding first, and they are easy to spot.

How to fix it: Ask "what kind of toy?" The answer to that question is the adjective.
