About this worksheet
The past tense tells what already happened. Most verbs add -ed (walk, walked), but many of the most common ones change instead: go becomes went, and write becomes wrote.
Second graders meet these irregular verbs in everything they read, so the sheet mixes them with regular ones.
A worked example
On Saturday, my cousins ___ a fort. (past tense of make)
- Read the verb under the blank: make.
- Say the sentence as if it already happened: "On Saturday, my cousins made a fort."
- Write made on the line.
Answer: made
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing "maked", "goed" or "taked".
Why it happens: The child knows the -ed rule and applies it to every verb, which is a sign they have learned the rule.
How to fix it: Say the sentence aloud with "yesterday" in front. Most children hear that "yesterday we goed" sounds wrong and find went.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
A printed page and a pencil. No screen, no login for your child. Snap a photo when they’re done: AI scores it, and what they missed comes back on the sheets that follow.
