About this worksheet
A collective noun is one word for a whole group: a team of players, a class of students, a flock of birds.
Different groups have their own words, so the sheet gives two choices and the child picks the one that fits.
A worked example
Mr. Ruiz carried a (stack / pod) of folders to the office.
- Find what is in the group: folders.
- Folders piled on top of each other are a stack. A pod is a group of whales.
- Circle stack.
Answer: stack
The common mistake
What it looks like: Picking a group word that goes with animals, such as a herd of folders.
Why it happens: Children know a few collective nouns well and stretch them to fit everything.
How to fix it: Read the sentence with each choice. "A stack of folders" sounds right; "a pod of folders" doesn't.
