About this worksheet
A vowel team is two vowels that make one sound together: ee in sheep, oa in boat, ai in train, ea in seal.
Often the first vowel says its name and the second is quiet. Knowing the common teams lets a child read many long-vowel words that have no silent e.
A worked example
A picture of a boat: b__t
- Say the word: boat.
- The sound in the middle is long o: /ō/.
- Long o in the middle of a word is often spelled oa.
- Write oa: boat.
Answer: oa
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing one vowel for the sound, like bot for boat or shep for sheep.
Why it happens: The child hears one sound and writes one letter, as they do for short vowels.
How to fix it: Say the word and ask whether the vowel says its name. If it does and there is no silent e, look for a vowel team.
